Cyprus Tourism - building new perspectives in relations with Spain

Interest in Cyprus starts with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain Miguel Angel Moratinos since he was the European Union envoy to the Middle East continued with a personal visit by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and the First Lady, Sonsoles Espinosa, the last Christmas in Paphos, and culminated with the presence of Cyprus in FITUR 2010.

Uncertain times and crisis are sometimes not the best advisers for international relations - Fortunately for Cyprus and despite political hesitancy, The 30th Tourism Exhibition FITUR 2010 in Spain proved to be sensational for Cyprus Tourism which confirmed overwhelming presence in the media such as newspapers El Mundo, the Economic Expansion and Negocio, specialized tourist publications, and other electronic media which were specially seduced by Cyprus as an " authentic tourism destination"

Key to the success of presence in Madrid was the multifaceted involvement of Ms Phoebe Katsouri, Director General of the CTO, with a significant engagement from members of the Board of CTO and the support of the Cyprus Embassy in Spain.

Surely the Spanish visitor will not replace the lost ground, but Spaniards visiting Cyprus will surely be reinforced this year. And with the opening of flights by Aegean Airlines to Barcelona and Madrid, with excellent connection to Athens, the prospect of direct flights suddenly makes for a tourist exchange to become a reality. According Mrs Katsouris, negotiations with main airlines are quite advanced as the inauguration of Airports in Larnaca and Pafos will become increasing vantage points for strengthening of relations and mobility in the region.

Francisco Rivero, president of the Federation of Tourism Journalists, said the event CTO Westin Palace hotel in the evening Wednesday, January 20: "I am ready to come to Cyprus to walk and to inform our readers about proximity destinations natural to Spain. Cyprus I am sure holds many treasures that Spaniards have not yet discovered, and with the evening celebrated here at the Westin Palace in Madrid, we will be building a definite appetite for traveling to Cyprus."

Finally it occurred – Cyprus Tourism Organization presented itself to Spanish Society and travel professionals in an intimate function in Madrid during the International tourism Fair FITUR. Avantless organised a singular event with leading professionals so as to present Mrs Katsouris and Mr. Philokyprou (member of the board) to some 70 persons in a cocktail organised in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus.

This is a stepping stone to Spain in a much better position than it has ever been for establishing tighter relations with Cyprus.
