I have discovered a new relaxing way of spending the weekend with my kids. Despite that I am from Limassol it is not until recently that I went to visit a rural, traditional cottage and got the taste of the real and genuine hospitality. The district of Limassol offers a wide range of Agrotourism Accommodation.

It seems that Cypriots are especially charmed by Spanish artists.The exhibition about Guernica in Nicosia (Bank of Cyprus Cultural Center) which will go around Cyprus for 2010, Miro of Mallorca also in Nicosia at the Municipal Art Center from March until May 2010.

And now something more emotional, more experiential, Jose Carreras live in Limassol. Accompanied by the Cyprus Symphonic Orchestra which will be directed by Miguel Ortega, the Catalan tenor will give us one of those concerts that one should not miss. The Municipal Garden Theatre of Limassol will be the scenery for this unforgettable concert. Just by the Mediterranean Sea, Jose Carreras will sing for us Mediterranean Passion, his tribute to this fantastic people of the Mediterranean.

Limassol Carnival 2010

Limassol is again dressing up for its most glorious days of the year. The town hall and all the citizens of Limassol are preparing their carnival week in an intense manner. They expect to host one of the most fantastic Carnival week in the Mediterranean. Hotels, restaurants, shops and pepole are geting ready to welcome the Carnival King (Valisia Karnavalo).

The Town Hall with the Carnival Committee have prepared a very nice and rich programe for this week.

Thursday
8 February

6.30p.m. Town Hall

The Limassol Municipality in collaboration with the Limassol Union of Self-educated Painters organize an exhibition for 2007 Carnival. The Mayor of Limassol Andreas Christou, will inaugurate the exhibition.

7.00p.m. King Carnival Entrance

The King Carnival, enters the town in a festive atmosphere on an illuminated float accompanied by Serenaders, the Majorettes of the Cyprus Girl Guides Association, the Mayor and Municipal Council.

The parade will start from the Town Hall at 7.00p.m. and will pass by the following streets: Themidos, Anexartisias, Ayiou Andreou, Karaiskaki (Municipal Library), Stasinou. It will end at the Heroes Square where carnival merrymaking with songs and dancing will take place.

Monternoi Kairoi choir will be singing as from 7.00p.m. at Heroes Square.

Fireworks at the Town Hall.at 7.00p.m.

The Vocal Ensemble of the Famagusta School of Music and the Choir "Mousikes Periplanisis" will be singing at the District Office Square from 6.00p.m.

Free wine will be offered by the wine industries ETKO, KEO, LOEL and SODAP.

Grand Carnival Parade

Serenaders Parade to be followed by the Limassol Municipality Philharmonic Orchestra, Majorettes of the Cyprus Girl Guide Association and the Grand Carnival parade with the King Carnival, floats, groups and individuals in the sound of a unified music. The parade will proceed along Makarios III Avenue up to Ayias Sofias Traffic Lights.

Prizes will be awarded for the best floats, groups and individuals.

The programme is subject to unexpected changes.

Wine festival in Limassol, Cypriot wineries open their barrels for the public

DRINK WINE, IT GIVES YOU LIFE

With this saying, Limassol, the town of fun and joy, welcomes one more year, the Wine Festival. The Festival is organized by the Municipality of Limassol and every year starts at the end of August, beginning of September in the Municipal Gardens (Dimosios Kipos), located in the centre of Limassol, opposite the beach.

The festival first started in 1961 as an honourable manifestation in the long wine producing tradition of the island.

Inspired by the ancient festivals dedicated to the God of Wine, Dionysos, and the Goddess of Beauty and Love, Aphrodite, it combines fun and entertainment with lots of food, wine and various shows by local and international artistic groups.

The Wine Festival is addressed to both locals and tourists and provides a unique opportunity for people to try various local wines produced by large and small wineries from all over Cyprus and traditional local food.

The traditional marking brand of the Festival is the huge statue of “Vrakas” (traditional name given to old generations men who used to wear instead of the trouser, the traditional “vraka”) at the entrance of the Gardens.

This year the Festival will start on the 28th August and will end on the 6th September.

Free wine will be offered to all visitors every evening between 20:00 – 23:00.

The wine of the Kings is the king of the Wines

Take a short tour outside the town of Limassol and visit the well known villages that produce the “wine of the Kings and the king of the wines”.

Commandaria is widely known in Cyprus since 4000 years ago. History states that the name dates from 1191 when Richard Coeur de Lion sold Cyprus to the Order of the Knights of the Temple. It is thought that this wine was served at his wedding to Queen Berengaria in that year. The territories in which the Templars settled were called “Commanderies”.

It is produced in a total of 14 villages mostly in the area of Limassol. The production of the wine is made exclusively with two types of Cyprus wines, the Xinisteri and the Mavro. Only grapes from vineyards that have been planted for at least 4 years are allowed while watering is prohibited.
Visit the traditional commandaria wine producing co operative in Limassol and see how this dessert wine is produced. Try a small glass of Commandaria and “Yia mas”.

Lania is a charming restored village only 20 minutes drive from the town of Limassol towards the mountains.

Lania has become famous for its artistic theme, since many artists live and create in the village.Their work and many other souvenirs are promoted and sold in the village’s shops.

Following the narrow paths, an impressive church built in the traditional way, dominates the centre of the village.
